দিনটি ১৯৯৮ সালের ২০ ফেব্রুয়ারী , ঢাকায় তখন আবাহনী ও মোহামেডান খেলা মানে তুমুল উত্তেজনা , আবাহনী দলের হয়ে ফিল্ডিং করার জন্য মাঠে নামেন রমন লাম্বা , ফরওয়ার্ড সর্ট লেগ অবস্থানে ফিল্ডিং করতে নামেন তখন রমন লাম্বা , ব্যাটম্যান এর খুব কাছেই সেই জায়গাটা । কিপার খালেদ মাসুদ , সাইফুল্লাহ খান জেম ও অন্যান্যরা তাঁকে হ্যালমেট পড়ার জন্য বলেছিলেন , কিন্তু রমন লাম্বা বললেন “আরে মাত্র একটি বলের ব্যপার ” কিন্তু সেই একটি বলই যে রমন লাম্বার প্রান কেড়ে নেবে সেটা কে জানত । ব্যাট হাতে তখন মোহামেডান এর মেরাব হোসেন অপি , বা হাতি স্পিনার সাইফুল্লাহ খান জেম এর বলে সজোরে ব্যাট চালান মোহামেডান এর মেরাব হোসেন অপি, আর বলটি আঘাত হানে রামানের মাথার বাম পাশে কানের ঠিক উপরে , তাৎক্ষনিক মুহূর্তে কিছুই বোঝা যায় নাই যে অবস্থা কতখানি ভয়াবহ , কিছু পরেই ঘটলো রিদয়বিদারক ঘটনা , তাঁর শারীরিক অবস্থা জিজ্ঞেস করাতে রামান বলে উঠলেন “আমি তো শেষ” মুলত তখনই যে শেষ সেটা হয়ত সেও বুঝতে পারেন নাই , কিছুক্ষণ পরেই মাঠ থেকে বেরিয়ে বমি করা শুরু করলেন, সঙ্গে সঙ্গে নিয়ে যাওয়া হল হাঁসপাতালে , ততক্ষনে তিনি অজ্ঞান হয়ে গিয়েছিলেন , এরপরদিন নিয়ে যাওয়া হল ঢাকার পিজি হাঁসপাতালে , তবে এর মধ্যেই তিনি কোমায় চলে গিয়েছিলেন , কোমায় তিন দিন থাকার পরে রমন লাম্বার লাইফ সাপোর্ট টি খুলে ফেলে দেওয়া ছাড়া আর কোন উপায় ছিল না। সহধর্মিণী আইরিস ও রমন লাম্বার বোন ভিকি এর কান্নায় ভারি হয়ে উঠে চারপাশের পরিবেশ , গোটা বাংলাদেশ স্তব্ধ , মাত্র ৩৮ বছর বয়সে ২২শে ফেব্রুয়ারি ১৯৯৮ সালে পৃথিবীর মায়া ত্যাগ করে চলে যান না ফেরার দেশে ।
